Club Structure: 'Chippenham Archers' is an 'umbrella' Club the Committee of which look after the interest of both the ‘Chippenham Target Archery Club’ and ‘Chippenham Junior Archery Club’. All members must be an 'in-date' member of our County Organisation 'Dorset and Wiltshire Archery Association' (DWAA) our Regional Organisation 'Grand Western Archery Society' (GWAS) and our National Governing body 'Archery GB' (GNAS - Grand National Archery Society).
Facilities: We are an Archery Club with unlimited access (with no additional 'pay as you use' fee) to both, a Target Range with a number Foam Bosses permanently out, and a permanently set 10 Target Field Course, we also shoot on designated Saturday Afternoons Indoors during the winter Season (Mid October to the following mid March) (again with no additional 'pay as you use' fee).
Membership: The Memberships ages range from 10 to well over 60 and we currently have 90+ members whose involvement in Archery ranges from a purely 'Social Shooting' to competing at National level and we have 2 Visually Impaired Archers. Before being invited to become a member, this Club, like other Archery Clubs, has to ensure that all its members are capable of partaking in the sport of Archery safely. Therefore, before becoming a member, those with previous experience will be vetted prior to joining and those new to the sport will have been expected to have successfully completed a structured Beginners Course either at this club or another registered Archery Club. Please note that the Club cannot accept Juniors under the age of 10 on our Beginners Courses or as Club Members. Our Club runs Beginners Courses commencing in April, details of the Course structure and contact details can be found on the 'Getting Started in Archery' page.
Cost of being a Member - Cost of membership is based on a single basic 'all inclusive' annual Membership Fee (currently £55.00) agreed at our end of year AGM in July. A concessions system is then applied so that those households with more than one Archer in it attracts a £5 discount, as does a Junior and there are further progressive discounts applied where there is more that one junior Archer in the household, an Archer over 60 also get a £5 discount. The only other payment a Senior Member has to make, via the club, is an annual 'Organisation Levy' . This 'Organisation Levy' is combination of three sums which are required so that Club Members continue to be, or in the case of new club members become, members of our County Organisation DWAA, our Regional Organisation GWAS and our National Governing body GNAS. The 'Organisation Levy' total for 2011/12 is £44.00). Junior Members Levy is currently paid for by the Club when they become a member of Chippenham Junior Archery Club.
For example If an Adult and one Junior from the same household joined the Club on the 1st of August 2011 the cost were as follows Adult £55 (Membership) - £5 (two in a Household + 'Organisational Levy' at a 2011/12 rate of £44 = £94 and the Junior, £55 less £5 (junior Discount) = £50. (When members join later in the membership period and the DWAA, GWAS and GNAS subscription Period a pro rata scale (based on quarters) is applied to both the Membership Fee and the 'Organisation Levy')
Please note that when comparing total cost of membership consideration should be given to the fact that, unlike some other Clubs, there are NO further additional charges required to use our Target and Field Course which are available anytime of the day every day (except a couple of days a year when they are closed due to hosting open Competitions) and there are NO additional charges for the use of our Indoor Facility on a Saturday afternoons over the winter period (see Club Calendar for dates).
Location: We are located amongst Farm Fields to the right off Frogwell at Allington, very near to, but NOT part of, the Chippenham Rugby Club, (which is on the left). As entry is through gates which are usually locked, those attending events at the club, including Beginners Courses, will be given specific directions and times when the gate will be unlocked.
History We were originally founded in 1955 when the Club was known as ‘The Bowmen of Cyppa’, Cyppa is the Anglo Saxon name from which Chippenham (settlement of Cyppa’s people) gets its name. Later the name was changed to Phoenix Archers but for many years we have been known as Chippenham Archers. As a club we shoot all styles of Bow from Olympic Recurve, Compound and Longbow through to the simple Primitive Bows similar to the 4500-year-old Meare Heath Bow. Please note that we do not shoot Crossbows at this club.
