Each year the Club runs Beginners Courses under the control of GNAS qualified Coaches, the aim of which being to teach Candidates aged from 10 to 65+ to be capable of partaking in the sport of Archery 'Safely', and it is hoped, 'fairly successfully', should they wish to join an Archery Club (not necessarily this Club).

Please note: This is a continuous shooting development Course where each session builds on the information and techniques learnt at the previous session hence it is important that where practical Candidates attend every session and at the same time.

Candidates are taught two styles of shooting ('Point of Aim' and 'Traditional Style') and includes a 1/2 session on Field Archery in our Field Course, also included are briefing and demonstration modules which cover the Longbow, Recurve and Compound Bows and one on different Types of Archery these are delivered at the mid point of each session when Candidates take a Tea/Coffee/Squash break, .

By Course completion, and as a prerequisite to joining this club, all candidates, are expected to have attained an archery proficiency level whereby they are capable of shooting reasonable well at a minimum distance of 20yds. (as this is the minimum distance that our outdoor practise targets are positioned from the shooting line and is the minimum distance that is shot by all members at our indoor venue)

Additional Information

‘Archery’ is often offered as part of holiday pursuits and some of our Candidates have ‘done it before’ however to ensure that a consistent standard is achieved, all Candidates will be taught on a basis that they are new to the sport and will be instructed in shooting techniques as taught to Archery Coach’s whilst partaking in the National Sports Coaching Scheme run by Archery GB (the trading name of the Grand National Archery Society).

All Candidates will be taught to shoot using the Club’s Recurve training Bows on a Target Archery Range, and, in order to ensure that our course is as comprehensive as possible, a practical session of Field Archery will be held on our Field Archery Range.  During the course there are practical demonstrations and lectures on Recurve (Olympic) Bows; Compound Bows; Longbows; Types of Archery and Field Archery.

Previous experience has shown that, following a course, many Parents/Guardian have expressed the view that they wished that they had also joined the course at the same time as the Junior Candidates therefore consideration should be given by Parents and Guardians of Juniors between 12 and 18 (Juniors note 2, above) to becoming Candidates at the same time.

Following completion of the course successful Candidates will be offered an additional session where those who wish to continue in the sport of archery by joining an Archery Club will be given a full briefing on what further guidance and assistance will be available to them and potential outlay that would be needed for the Candidates to have their own equipment.  The primary aim of the brief being to ensure that those wishing to join an Archery Club are totally aware of all this would involve (particularly relevant to Parents/Guardians).
