The
club was originally founded in 1955 when it was known as ‘The Bowmen of
Cyppa’, Cyppa is the Anglo Saxon name from which Chippenham (settlement of Cyppa’s
people) gets its name. Later the name was changed to Phoenix Archers but
for many years we have been known as Chippenham Archers. As
a club we shoot all styles of Bow from Olympic Recurve, Compound and
Longbow through to the simple Primitive Bows similar to the 4500-year-old
Meare Heath Bow. Please note that we do not shoot Crossbows at this club. We
are a combined Target and Field Archery Club and the Chippenham Archers
actually consists of three Clubs ‘Chippenham Target Archery Club’, ‘Chippenham
Field Archery Club’ and ‘Chippenham Junior Archery Club’. Every member must
be either a member of either GNAS (Grand National Archery Society) or NFAS
(National Field Archery Society) and all Junior Archers become members of
GNAS when they join the Club but should they wish to take part in events
held under NFAS they must themselves become members of NFAS. In order that GNAS and NFAS members of Chippenham
Archers can shoot together at the designated Chippenham Archers Venues (the
Target Range, the Field Course and the Indoor Range) the Club has its own
Insurance cover for members whilst at these venues only
(GNAS and NFAS Insurance does not
cover members of both Societies Shooting together). ABOUT US CLUB RECORDS
